Subnautica 2 - Lossless Engine Tweaks
About
This is a clean, lossless Engine.ini for Subnautica 2 focused on reducing hitching and improving general smoothness without intentionally lowering visual quality or changing the overall look of the game.
The goal is simple:
better streaming, smoother traversal, cleaner async loading behavior, and improved shader cache / PSO handling while keeping the original visual presentation intact.
This is a config tweak, not a gameplay mod or content mod.
What this config focuses on
• Texture streaming behavior[/*]
• Async loading and IO behavior[/*]
• Shader pipeline cache / PSO behavior[/*]
• Garbage collection tuning[/*]
• General frame-time stability[/*]
What this config does NOT try to do
• No intentional visual downgrade[/*]
• No forced low LOD look[/*]
• No color or tonemapper overhaul[/*]
• No aggressive shadow or lighting cuts[/*]
• No Lumen disable[/*]
• No Nanite disable[/*]
• No Virtual Shadow Map disable[/*]
• No “potato mode” changes[/*]
This means it avoids the usual heavy-handed tweak pack approach where bloom, depth of field, film grain, sharpening, shadows, lighting, LODs, and other visual settings are heavily changed just to chase performance. But there is an optional file for visual clarity.
Who this is for
This file is for players who want a safer first-pass Engine.ini:
something cleaner and more conservative than the usual aggressive UE tweak packs.
If you want the game to feel smoother without obviously changing how it looks, this is the version to start with.
Install path
Place the Engine.ini file here:
%LOCALAPPDATA% Subnautica2 Saved Config Windows
• Place this Engine.ini in the config folder shown above.[/*]
• Launch the game and test normally.[/*]
Recommended testing
After installing, pay attention to:
• Traversal hitching[/*]
• Asset / texture pop-in[/*]
• Shader stutter[/*]
• General smoothness during movement and loading[/*]
• Stutter when entering new areas or turning quickly[/*]
Uninstall
Delete this Engine.ini and restore your backup.
Notes
• As with any Engine.ini tweak, results can vary by hardware, driver version, game updates, and in-game settings.[/*]
• If a future Subnautica 2 patch changes config behavior, you may need to remove or retest this file.[/*]
• This is meant to be a clean baseline and can be expanded later into more aggressive variants if needed.[/*]
• This file is not meant to replace in-game graphics settings. Keep using the in-game options that fit your hardware[/*]
Feedback is welcome
If you test it, feel free to share:
your hardware, your in-game settings, what improved, and what still stutters.
